Text: Exodus 17:1-7 (KJV)

1 And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the LORD, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.

2 Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the LORD?

3 And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?

4 And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.

5 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.

6 Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

7 And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us, or not?

Key Verse: “Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, why chide ye with me? Wherefore do ye tempt the LORD?” (Exodus 17:2).

MESSAGE:

Passion is a strong feeling of enthusiasm for something. Passion, if not properly guarded, could lead to negative results which can damn the soul. The consequences could lead from one problem to the other.

Our text narrates the journey of the children of Israel to the Promised Land. They had just left the wilderness of Sin and by the commandment of God, they were asked to pitch in Rephidim. In Rephidim, there was no water for the people to drink. They thirsted for water and murmured against Moses. Moses had to cry to God and the Lord directed him to smite the rock in Horeb. The smiting of the rock brought out the water for the people to drink and satisfied their desire.

It was not the need of water by the children of Israel that mattered. They were outrageous in their demand. They directed their demand to Moses instead of God. Instead of praying to God, they were weeping and crying to Moses. Their action was purely a demonstration of unbelief.

Unguarded passions provoked by unbridled appetites can make us guilty and act like sinners. We must not allow our inordinate cry and passion for our needs to make us look like rebels before the Almighty. This actions sometimes force our leaders to run to God with fear.

Although the journey of Israel was directed by God under the direction of the Pillar of cloud and fire, yet there was need in the lives of the people. That we are under a ministry filled and directed by the power of God does not mean we won’t have needs in our lives. God in His love and mercy performed a miracle of water for the children of Israel. That Rock was Christ and the coming of water from that rock was a demonstration of Christ’s grace as unmerited favour brought down for us. Let’s carry our need to God through Christ by pleading and spreading our hands of faith to Him.

MEDITATION

Redeemed but yet carnal

1. Catalogues of miracles

A recollection of miracles received by Israel before now shows that Israel had no excuse for “tempting God” or manifesting carnality

a. 10 mighty unprecedented miracles and signs in Egypt Exodus 7-11.

b. The greatest miracle: redemption by the blood (Justification) Exodus 12.

c. Consequence of redemption: victory and deliverance from the chief enemy (salvation from sin) Exodus 14.

d. Bitter water miraculously healed to satisfy their thirst 15:22-27.

e. Manna provided to satisfy their hunger 16:14-20.

Q. Have you miraculously received the greatest miracle of redemption? Do you allow your legitimate needs to rubbish the greatest thing God has done for you and become ungrateful?

2. The traits of carnality manifested

a. Inability to change after divine rebuke and correction. They were told earlier of God’s detest for murmuring and complaining, still yet they persisted 16:9-11.

Q. Are there areas God or His word has corrected or rebuked you and yet you are still unrepentant?

b. Murmuring against God’s appointed leaders instead of praying to God 17:3.

c. Lack of discipline with respect to appetite and legitimate needs 17:2.

d. Wilful forgetfulness of great things God has done in the past because of present distress or need 17:1,2.

e. Ingratitude to God, His appointed ministers or His children when the going goes tough 17:4.

f. Transfer of aggression to the innocent when pressure becomes difficult to bear 17:4.

g. Lack of close relationship with God that makes it difficult to approach God directly 17:3,4.

h. Preference of murmuring instead of intercession and support for leaders or helpers when needs are not immediately met 17:3,4.

I. Tempting (testing) God: Provoking God or using unscriptural carnal methods, e.g. murmurings or threatening, to force God to do His will either prematurely or unhappily.

Q. Can you claim to be free from carnality?

3. The problem with carnality

Inability to consecrate and get close to God and live a life free from carnality eventually hindered most of them from reaching their promised land (destiny) and landed them in hell. Romans 8:5-8.

HYMN

CLOSE TO THEE

1. Thou my everlasting Portion,
More than friend or life to me,
All along my pilgrim journey,
Savior, let me walk with Thee.
Close to Thee, close to Thee,
Close to Thee, close to Thee;
All along my pilgrim journey,
Savior, let me walk with Thee.

2. Not for ease or worldly pleasure,
Not for fame my prayer shall be;
Gladly will I toil and suffer,
Only let me walk with Thee.
Close to Thee, close to Thee,
Close to Thee, close to Thee;
Gladly will I toil and suffer,
Only let me walk with Thee.

3. Lead me through the vale of shadows,
Bear me o’er life’s fitful sea;
Then the gate of life eternal
May I enter, Lord, with Thee.
Close to Thee, close to Thee,
Close to Thee, close to Thee;
Then the gate of life eternal
May I enter, Lord, with Thee.
