MESSAGE:

Faith is important in the Christian walk as it opens the treasure house of God’s abundant provisions. Without faith, the believer cannot receive the required grace to please God and walk in righteousness and holiness.

Today’s passage catalogues the exploits of heroes of faith, who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, out of weakness were made strong and suffered many things to obtain a good report. Yet, they received not the promise and could not be made perfect without the New Testament believers.

In the plan of God, He had in mind the full realisation of His promised blessings for the life that would be experienced by all new covenant believers. Believers under the old covenant could not receive the fullness of blessings brought by the death of Christ because these were to be achieved only as part of the new covenant.

The better things God has in the better covenant for the new testament believers include salvation through the blood of Jesus, sanctification, Holy Ghost baptism, unlimited access to heaven through prayers, healing, deliverance, perfection (holiness), Christ’s intercession/meditation, etc.

These privileges should encourage everyone to come into this covenant relationship with God to enjoy the benefits of the covenant. How do we become partakers? We become partakers when we truly repent of every sin and demonstrate our faith in Christ’s substitutionary atonement. This is the platform upon which the better things, established upon better promises are predicted. These privileges come to those who have invited Jesus into their heart.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Christ is the Chief Priest of the Better Covenant.

COVER TO COVER

Exploits through faith

1. Can you recall how the 6 men of faith in v32 manifested faith? How does it apply to you?

2. Analyse the 10 exploits of faith in vv33-35a and check up which of them is applicable or challenging to you.

3. Analyse the 9 acts of endurance of faith in vv35b-38 and check up which one is applicable or challenging to your faith.

4. Is it possible for you to have a good report or commendation from God without manifesting consistent faith in God? v39. No alternative to faith in God for those who want to please God.

5. Clarification
Perfection in v40 is not referring to sanctification because Job, Enoch etc received sanctification without the birth of the New Testament saints. However, the Old Testament saints could not receive the promise of eternal glory through resurrection because there cannot be the resurrection of the Old Testament saints without the rapture or the resurrection of the New Testament saints (the Church) first.

HYMN:
FAITH OF OUR FATHERS

1. Faith of our fathers! living still
in spite of dungeon, fire, and sword;
oh, how our hearts beat high with joy
whene’er we hear that glorious word!
Faith of our fathers, holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death!

2. Faith of our fathers! we will strive
to win all nations unto thee,
and through the truth that comes from God,
the world shall then be truly free:
faith of our fathers, holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death!

3. Faith of our fathers! we will love
both friend and foe in all our strife;
and preach thee, too, as love knows how,
by kindly words and virtuous life:
faith of our fathers, holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death!

PRAYER POINTS

1. Ask for the spirit of faith to dominate your life.

2. Bind and denounce all the spirits of fear, timidity, worry and anxiety, lukewarmness etc that are contrary to the Spirit of faith in your life.

3. Ask God to use His written word, through the help of the Holy Spirit, to develop your faith and you as a man/woman/lady/boy of faith.

4. Ask for the faith that will count us among those with good report before God and eventually be worthy of rapture.
