MESSAGE:

In his book, “Talent is never Enough,” John C. Maxwell writes, “Having talent without focus is like being an octopus on roller skates. You can be sure that there will be plenty of movement, but you won’t know in what direction it will be. Focus can bring tremendous power. With it, you find that your talent and abilities gain direction and intentionality. And these qualities pay off by producing results.”

Our text tells of Samson’s trip to the Philistine city of Timnath to seek a wife. Despite the parents’ protest as to the propriety of his action, he insisted because the woman “pleaseth [him] well.” His great power came into display when on the way he tore a lion that roared at him with bare hands. A marriage was eventually contracted on his second visit, which marked the starting of his life’s journey.

A Chinese proverb says, “the journey of a thousand miles starts with one step.” The journey of Samson to Timnath marked the beginning of a God ordained ministry which ended in tragedy. His lack of temperance; his lustful disposition and incoherent decisions truncated the wonderful ministry God gave him. As one looks at the life and times of Samson, the great power given to him; expectations from both God and Israel and his dismal end, one cannot but feel disappointed at the colossal wastage of divine resources.

To receive talents is one thing, but to effectively use them is another. Solomon, who though was endowed with great wisdom and wealth beyond every other king, eventually went into idolatry with his numerous strange wives. Christ has called us and given us different talents. We must be careful not to waste them so as not to incur God’s wrath on that final day like the unprofitable servant in Christ’s parable (Matthew 25:14-30).

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Use your talents for God’s glory.

COVER TO COVER: NEHEMIAH 1-4.

MEDITATION

The price and the profit in faith

1. True faith is demonstrated by how much legitimate things we can give up for Christ if required vv28,29.

2. The reward of sacrifice of faith is assured in this world and in eternity. It is a matter of time vv29,30. No true christian is destined to permanent poverty in this world.

3. Note that persecution is also classified under reward. Why? 2Timothy 2:11,12, Matthew 5:10-12.

Q. Are there things you find difficult to give up for Christ (e.g. pride, possessions, privileges, positions, passions, partnerships etc)? Then you are giving up some of your divinely assigned blessings vv29,30.

Q. Are you directly or indirectly doing things that will make you avoid persecutions? Then you are unknowingly avoiding some divinely assigned blessings.

4. Jesus joyfully faced the cross. After the cross followed the glory of resurrection vv32-34.

Q. Do you know you are fortunate if you have a cross to carry? After successfully carrying the cross, glory followed.

Q. Do you carry your cross cheerfully and graciously like Jesus did?

HYMN

Faith of our fathers

1. Faith of our fathers, living still
In spite of dungeon, fire and sword,
O how our hearts beat high with joy
Whene’er we hear that glorious word!
Faith of our fathers! holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death!

2. Our fathers, chained in prisons dark,
Were still in heart and conscience free;
And blest would be their children’s fate,
If they, like them should die for thee:
Faith of our fathers! holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death!

3. Faith of our fathers, we will strive
To win all nations unto thee;
And through the truth that comes from God
Mankind shall then indeed be free.
Faith of our fathers! holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death!

4. Faith of our fathers, we will love
Both friend and foe in all our strife,
And preach thee, too, as love knows how
By kindly words and virtuous life.
Faith of our fathers! holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death!
