MESSAGE:

For every man, life is short and uncertain. Only the near approach of death is ever so sure. It is therefore necessary that we place priority on living a life that counts for eternity.

The story of Jephthah shows that God can use anyone to accomplish His purpose. Through his boldness and faith in the God of Israel, he obtained great deliverance for Israel against the Ammonites.

Jephthah was firm in his decision and vow to God. His steadfastness is a lesson to contemporary believers. Although, he died after only six years of his victory over the Ammonites, that victory brought peace that lasted over 31 years to Israel. The three judges that ruled immediately after Jephthah had no wars to fight for their reigns were peaceful.

However, after the death of Jephthah, Israel soon went back to their sinful lifestyle. The three succeeding judges passed away quickly after their respective short reigns that God might again visit Israel for their sin and backsliding. When iniquity abounds in the land, and righteous leaders become few, it is a sign that evil days are near.

The lessons in today’s passage are many. First, we must come to terms with the brevity of life. No matter how long we live, our life is short in view of eternity. Second, it is unwise to bask endlessly the joy of an earthly victory or success; we must not lose focus of eternity. Third, the peace we make or the row we cause today may have effects running on after us for some generations after. We must therefore endeavour to make peace with men at all times.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

The righteous is taken away from the wrath to come.

COVER TO COVER
LEVITICUS 8-11.

PONDER:
The life that counts
1. Jephthah was the son of an harlot (a bastard), but his faith in God and vow to follow God changed everything about his history and destiny; and he became an hero 11:1; 12:29,30.

Lesson
It is not your background that matters but your resolve to live a distinguished life through faith in God and decision to live for God.

2. Of all the 3 kings in the text, his reign was the shortest but yet the most consequential vv7,11,14.

Lesson
It is not how long but how positively influential to humanity.

3. Jephthah had only one “child”; and the only “child” became an historical figure through her faith and consecration vv36,39,40. The other 2 kings in the text had 70 each but nothing to write home about those 140 children vv9,14.

Lesson:
It is not how many children you have that matters but how many you are able to train to live a meaningful and helpful life to humanity.

4. 47 verses were devoted to Jephthah and was named an hero of faith in Hebrews 11; whereas only a total of 7 verses were devoted to the other 2 kings.

Challenge
If you pass on now, what would people write or say about your influence and accomplishments in the lives of others?

HYMN:
Only remembered by what you have done

1 Fading away like the stars of the morning,
Losing their light in the glorious sun–
Thus would we pass from the earth and its toiling,
Only remembered by what we have done.

Refrain:
Only remembered, only remembered,
Only remembered by what we have done;
Thus would we pass from the earth and its toiling,
Only remembered by what we have done.

2 Shall we be miss’d though by others succeeded,
Reaping the fields we in springtime have sown?
No, for the sowers may pass from their labors,
Only remembered by what they have done.

[Refrain]

3 Only the truth that in life we have spoken,
Only the seed that on earth we have sown;
These shall pass onward when we are forgotten,
Fruits of the harvest and what we have done.

[Refrain]

4 Oh, when the Saviour shall make up His jewels,
When the bright crowns of rejoicing are won,
Then shall His weary and faithful disciples,
All be remembered by what they have done.

[Refrain]

PRAYER POINTS:

1. Lord, give me the will and the power to live a life that counts.

2. Give me the willingness to pay the price of living an influential life.

3. Lord, make all my children (born or yet to be born) to be people of godly purpose and influence in their generation.

4. Pray for all our young ones in the church to have the faith and the commitment that will make them heroes of faith in their generation.
