TEXT: EZRA 10:6-8.

KEY VERSE: “Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Johanan, the son of Eliashib and when he came thither, he did eat no bread, nor drink water: for he mourned because of the transgression of them that had been carried away” (EZRA 10:6).

MESSAGE:

Faced with the frightening information that mass murder and extermination had been determined by Haman against her people, Esther the queen asked for a 3-day fast for God to intervene and frustrate the plan of the wicked Haman. This, however, brought an intense burden to her that nothing else in this world mattered to her anymore. At this time, Esther could not have waited or delayed an extra minute because of what was about befalling the entire Jews at Shushan.

In today’s account, burdened by the sin and trespasses of the people, Ezra had gone into the house of God to pray and had confessed he and his people’s sins, weeping and casting himself down. It is said that a leader’s example is a leading example. The result of Ezra’s action was positively instantaneous. Within three days, “there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore.”

Ezra as teacher and God’s appointed leader of the people was bothered and burdened that Israel was sliding back into the path of sin that led the nation into captivity less than a hundred years before. Their repentance therefore had to be genuine and all-involving.

Following Ezra’s example, a great majority of the general populace including the priests called for radical reformation. The lesson is clear: When a leader leads aright and in conformity with God’s word and commandments, the people will unquestionably follow. This is why every saved soul must endeavour to practice whatsoever he preaches. Be a good leading example.

MEDITATION

Mourn before it is too late

1. The returned captives went back to the major sin that led their fathers into captivity which was inter-marriages with the unrighteous and worldly neighbours v2.

2. Ezra did not wait for a Prophet to come with judgemental “thus saith the Lord” or warning before he knew that judgement was inevitable without repentance, restitution and righteous indignation against sin vv1-3.

Q. Why didn’t he wait for divine warning from a prophet before he knew that judgement was imminent?

Q. Why is it folly and self deception for the sinning or compromising modern man, including church goer, to think he is eternally secured in his compromising life even though the word of God clearly condemn his actions?

Note

Whether the modern preachers emphasize the truth or water it down, the word of God remains unchanged and God’s anger against compromise remains unchanged like as in the Bible days.

3. Ezra turned his concern into mournful fasting and a call to repentance and restitution vv6,7.

Q. What are the evils that call for mourning in your Church and nation today?

Q. Do you prayerfully mourn, coupled with call for repentance, like Ezra did? Or are you nonchalant? Or you prefer to face only your challenges? Are there Christians who still mourn and seek the face of God because of the evils in our days?Matthew 5:4.

Poser

1. An indulgent christian cannot effectively mourn and show concern for the evils in the land.

2. A light hearted and worldly christian will not have burdens for the evils in our days.

3. A selfish Christian will rather concentrate on his/personal challenges rather than show concern for the unrighteousness and compromises in the land.

4. A sensual christian cannot receive burdens and Spirit of mourning from the Lord.

5. The more a christian mourn for the evils in the Church and in the land, the less he/she complains against the leadership of the Church and the nation respectively.

HYMN

Did you think to pray?

1 Ere you left your room this morning,
Did you think to pray?
In the name of Christ our Savior,
Did you sue for loving favor,
As a shield today?

Chorus:
Oh, how praying rests the weary!
Prayer will change the night to day;
So in sorrow and in gladness,
Don’t forget to pray.

2 When you met with great temptation,
Did you think to pray?
By His dying love and merit,
Did you claim the Holy Spirit
As your guide and stay?

(Chorus)

3 When your heart was filled with anger,
Did you think to pray?
Did you plead for grace, my brother,
That you might forgive another
Who had crossed your way?

(Chorus)

4 When sore trials came upon you,
Did you think to pray?
When your soul was bowed in sorrow,
Balm of Gilead did you borrow
At the gates of day?

(Chorus).
