TEXT: 1 KINGS 12:16-24.

KEY VERSE: “Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They hearkened therefore to the word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD” (1 KINGS 12:24).

MESSAGE:

Mankind has moved several times to the brink of a third world war according to the Doomsday Clock, a symbol said to be a measurement for the likelihood of man-made global catastrophe. In January 2018, the clock recorded the danger level of two minutes to ‘midnight’, due to “the looming threats of nuclear war and climate change…” The clock’s time had gone back and forth numerous times, depending on how grave tensions had been tamed by international intervention.

Back in time, Judah and newly break-away Israel, Also found themselves at the point of war. Rehoboam succeeded King Solomon under a united nation, only to discover that a secession was building up with Jeroboam his late father’s servant as the leader. Dialogue failed and armies were raised to resolve the two nation’s differences. An emissary of Rehoboam was killed while the king himself escaped by a whisker as plans for war thickened.

When it was only seconds to the ‘midnight’ of outbreak of hostilities, God turned back the hands of the clock, demonstrating His ability to maintain peace and redeem the most hopeless situation caused by man’s disobedience. God proved to the war-bent people of Judah and Israel that He is the Sovereign Lord, “the most High (Who) ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whosoever he will and setteth up over it the basest of men” (Daniel 4:17).

The spiritual doomsday clock is also ticking towards the end time with Jesus’ irreversible imminent return for judgement. The sinner and the backslider must heed the call of God to make a U-turn or end their lives in hell. Rehoboam listened to God and saved the people of the two kingdoms needless bloodshed and suffering. How peaceful our world, nation, community and homes would be if we follow the gospel of the Prince of Peace!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY Only God can pull man back from the brink.

COVER TO COVER 2 KINGS 9-10.

MEDITATION

How love and peace can reign among brethren

1. The usual mistakes

a. Rehoboam was given an opportunity to make a great decision that could make or mar his kingdom vv12-15.

b. He never sought the face of God vv12-15.

c. He decided to follow the foolish advice of his peers vv12-15.

Oh, if he had learnt to wait upon the Lord for guidance, the kingdom of David would not have divided into two with its attendant calamities.

2. He could not perceive that God was very close to Him

a. The truth: God is always close to man except that He only responds to man’s requests to intervene in his affairs vv22-24.

b. Rehoboam, because of his unregenerate heart, did not realize this fact.

c. If he had sought the counsel of God throughout his challenges, he would have avoided a total collapse of his grip on the 10 tribes vv16-18.

d. When in need of peace in a family, church or community, take time to first seek the face of God and hear His voice, rather than man’s wisdom, and follow His guidance. God is closer than you ever thought or imagined vv21-24.

Q. Why did God still spoke to the Rehoboam even when he had ignored Him?

Q. Peace lacking in your relationship, community or Church? Seek His face until He speaks before you act and you will marvel at the result.

HYMN Close to Thee

1.Thou my everlasting Portion,
More than friend or life to me,
All along my pilgrim journey,
Savior, let me walk with Thee.
Close to Thee, close to Thee,
Close to Thee, close to Thee;
All along my pilgrim journey,
Savior, let me walk with Thee.

2. Not for ease or worldly pleasure,
Not for fame my prayer shall be;
Gladly will I toil and suffer,
Only let me walk with Thee.
Close to Thee, close to Thee,
Close to Thee, close to Thee;
Gladly will I toil and suffer,
Only let me walk with Thee.

3.Lead me through the vale of shadows,
Bear me o’er life’s fitful sea;
Then the gate of life eternal
May I enter, Lord, with Thee.
Close to Thee, close to Thee,
Close to Thee, close to Thee;
Then the gate of life eternal
May I enter, Lord, with Thee.
