MESSAGE:

On December 10, 1914, there was a massive explosion in West Orange, New Jersey in USA that engulfed and destroyed Thomas Edison’s entire life work. Calmly, Edison told his astonished 24 year old son, Charles “our entire factory has been burnt to ashes, but all the mistakes we made so far have been burnt with the factory; we will start all over again afresh tomorrow”. He was 67 years old at that time. The next day was a fresh beginning for the inventor and his son.

In the text, Prophet Jeremiah was also in despair, having been mocked, derided, confounded, discouraged and terrorised. His agony almost took the better of him to the extent that he accused God of deceiving him into a seemingly difficult and arduous ministry. For a moment, he even decided not to preach or deliver God’s messages again because of the contents and repercussions of the messages. But the Lord never abandoned him. Through divine succour, sustenance, enablement and reassurance, he was able to pull through his travails and continue his ministry successfully.

Sometimes, we go through times we wish never existed! One may go through difficulty where one might wish that one should die! Only a strong desire to fulfill one’s God-given mission will propel one forward. Great people do not cry; they try to rebuild their dreams. They do not give up but live up to the challenges life throws to them. They start all over again with great hope, ardour, determination, zeal and resilience!

Be assured that the Lord will never forsake you, no matter what your travails are. Look beyond the setback and visualise the loving God, who is always close by to succour the courageous.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY No challenges, no success; know challenge, know success.

COVER TO COVER ROMANS 10-12.

PONDER:

The spiritually gifted are not necessarily spiritually matured

1. The gift of the prophet

a. He had the gift of prophecy vv8,9,11,13.

b. He had a burning zeal for God and His glory vv8,9.

c. He had an uncommon closeness to God and was a prayer warrior vv11,12.

d. What other traits of spirituality could you observe in the prophet?

2. The prophet’s immaturity

a. Limited knowledge of God v7. God cannot be a deceiver. There was no complete Bible in his days.

b. He was not dead to self v8,10,18. He was still tied to the opinion of men about him rather than being satisfied with the praise of God alone.
He who would please God must be dead to the acceptance, commendation and opinions of the corrupted man.

c. His consecration to do the will of God at all cost was not perfect. His basis of withdrawal from preaching was self respect and honour and not for the glory of God vv8-10.

d. Frustrations and loneliness, despite the assured presence of God vv11,13, made him to offer senseless and ungodly prayers vv14-18.

Lesson: Don’t deify the spiritually gifted. They are men of “like passions”. What the word of God says takes precedence over their words and actions.

HYMN:

FAITH OF OUR FATHERS

1. Faith of our fathers, living still
In spite of dungeon, fire and sword,
O how our hearts beat high with joy
Whene’er we hear that glorious word!
Faith of our fathers! holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death!

2. Faith of our fathers, we will strive
To win all nations unto thee;
And through the truth that comes from God
Mankind shall then be truly free.
Faith of our fathers! holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death!

3. Faith of our fathers, we will love
Both friend and foe in all our strife,
And preach thee, too, as love knows how
By kindly words and virtuous life.
Faith of our fathers! holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death!

2. Lord, I lay self on the altar. Make me dead to self, mockery and opinions of corrupt men.

3. Lord, as I study your word and pray regularly, bring me up in spiritual knowledge and maturity.

4. Pray for God’s prophets and ministers in this nation that they will receive abundant grace to be faithful to the written word of God.
