TEXT: 1 CORINTHIANS 15:1-9.

It is advisable that you meditatively & prayerfully read the text first

KEY VERSE “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures” (1 CORINTHIANS 15:3,4).

MESSAGE:

A man had a bar where he sold alcoholic beverages. He was a very cruel and violent man whose presence conjured terror for his wife and ten-year-old daughter.

A visible mark on the left arm of the young lady was a constant reminder of her father’s brutality. But one day, something ‘strange’ happened. A preacher came to Mr. Graham to explain the mercies and love of God through Jesus Christ.

The man listened with rapt attention and demanded to know if such measures could be extended to a man like him. On receiving an assurance from the preacher, he surrendered his life to Christ and became a changed person.

For the first time, his daughter saw him smile and happy. Later, he asked for the wife’s and daughter’s forgiveness and took them to the church where they also gave their lives to Christ. Peace, love and joy came to the family. That is the power of the gospel.

In the passage, Paul the apostle reminded the Corinthian Christians of the authenticity of the gospel message – the death, burial, resurrection and ascension of Christ – which he received that transformed his life and which he passed on to them as well.

The gospel message has such a transforming power that no matter how deep one might have gone in cultism, idol worship, atheism, drug addiction, immorality, etc. if he sincerely repents and accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, salvation comes.

The mercy of God is still available today. “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely” (Revelation 22:17).

As Paul received the true gospel and passed it on to others, so must every true believer do. The Lord’s command is “…Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15). It is a task that must be done.

MEDITATION

The unchanging fundamentals

1. The essentials vv3-7.

a. The reality of the death, burial and the resurrection of Jesus Christ are nonnegotiable essentials of the gospel vv3,4.

b. It was not an after thought. It was prophesied right from creation Genesis 3:15, Psalm 16:9,10 (Acts 2:22-32), Isaiah 53.

c. Everything happened “according to the scriptures” exactly as prophesied thousands of years before fulfilment.

d. Purpose of death, burial and resurrection of Christ: “died for our sins”, ” rose up for our justification” Romans 4:25.

2. The evident eye witnesses vv5-8.

a. Peter and the other Apostles, who saw Him face to face at 8 different periods within 40 days before His Ascension. So real that they willingly died for His defense v5,7.

b. James, the half brother of Jesus who later became the President of Headquarters Church in Jerusalem v7, Acts 15:13,19.

c. 500 brethren who were even alive when the scriptures was written v6.

d. Paul, the Apostle, also saw the resurrected Christ with his naked eyes v8.

e. So, it was not a make up story.

3. The experience

a. You must believe this fact in your heart and stand on it if you want salvation v1.

b. If you don’t take these truth of the scripture seriously and with commitment, your superficial faith will not yield you salvation – it will be in vain v2.

3. The effect of sincere faith and commitment to Christ will yield noticeable transformation of life v9.

4. For example, the proud, persecuting and presumptuous Paul was transformed to a holy, humble, heavenly minded, heartbroken and heart healing Paul overnight. True salvation and deliverance from sin is instantaneous.

Q. Is there any time you can remember that you gave your life to Christ and received a miraculous and total transformation?

Praise God if you are saved and sincerely ask for the experience if you don’t have it

Pray for mere religious church goers in your church that they will receive mercy to encounter Jesus

Ask God to teach you what to teach you different methods of preaching the gospel during this shut down

Pray that His gospel will reach more people during this shut down

Ask God to kill the virus and cleanse our land from its infection

HYMN

Go and tell the story

1. Go and tell the story to thy friends to-day,
How the Lord of glory met thee on thy way;
How He cleansed thy spirit from the stain of sin,
Driving out the foe who reigned thy heart within.

Chorus:
Go and tell the story, tell it far and wide,
How the Lord of glory for the sinner died;
And the soul that hears it, and in faith believes,
Straightway he the cleansing from the Lord receives.

2 Go and tell the story, of His pow’r to save,
Of the sinful “Legion” sunk beneath the wave;
Tell of His compassion, of His love so true,
Of the wondrous things the Lord hath done for you.

[Chorus]

3 Go and tell the story, how He reigns above,
Winning men to glory thro’ His dying love;
How He waits to crown them kings forevermore,
In the home awaiting, on the other shore.

[Chorus]
