It is advisable that you prayerfully and meditatively read the text first

TEXT: JEREMIAH 21:1-14.

KEY VERSE “And I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger, and in fury, and in great wrath” (JEREMIAH 21:5).

MESSAGE:

Satan is blamed for everything evil. A thief who is caught red-handed with stolen items blames the ‘devil’ for pushing him into the act. This happens often whenever people need a convenient scapegoat to bear the blame for their shortcomings and failings in life.

While there is a certain sense in which that can be true, it fails to take into consideration all the other issues, including our own personal responsibility for our actions.

Jeremiah told a stunned delegate from Zedekiah, king of Judah, that God Himself was fighting against Israel for their utter disregard for divine instructions and their willful practice of idolatry.

With this revelation, Israel was now doomed to surrender to their enemies, go into captivity and have their beautiful cities and the temple burnt with fire. God promised to withdraw His protection over His own people, assist the Babylonians in gaining access into the city and ensure Israel was defeated.

Only those who surrendered to the Babylonians were guaranteed their lives. The king of Judah together with his counsellors were worried about the Babylonians who were already laying siege to Jerusalem without considering that their main enemies were themselves and that God was responsible for this scourge.

Most times, we blame the devil for being behind our troubles. If it is not the devil, then it must be the work of an enemy somewhere, perhaps a witch or wizard in the village who has cast a spell on us.

But the first thing to do whenever things go wrong is to look inwards, pray and find out if our ways are right with God. “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14).

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Better to first look inwards, when challenges arise.

MEDITATION:

Why pandemic? Spiritual viewpoint

God vowed to destroy man and beast in Judah with pestilence or epidemic v6. Why?

1. Moral ineptitude

a. A total breakdown of godly values vv12, 14.

b. Previous chapters mentioned idol worships, hypocrisy, satanism, blood letting etc.

Q Are you morally upright before God or you have some issues you have not repented from and ask the blood of Jesus to cleanse?

2. Man’s intransigence

a. Pashur knew that there was a prophecy of Judgement upon him and he ignored it 20:6. In fact, he subjected Jeremiah to inhuman treatment 20:2.

b. King Zedekiah also knew that Jeremiah was a genuine prophet of God. That was why he sent to inquire from him. Yet he ignored all his prophecies calling for personal and national repentance and make life more difficult for Jeremiah.

c. Despite his intransigence after the prophet’s several call to personal and national repentance, he proudly still asked Jeremiah to check up with God for deliverance from captivity vv1,2. He was guilty of seeking God for blessings without repentance like many do today.

Q. Sure you are not like Pashur and the king who refused to repent and still expect God to speak mercy to them and “manufacture” good revelation for them?

Q Are you like them asking for deliverance while ignoring all calls for repentance? Repentance first before mercy.

d. God eventually decided to smite them with pestilence, famine and deaths vv6,7.

3. Misused inspiration

a. At this time God had finally ruled out mercy that will stop their captivity vv10,13,14. Going to captivity became an irreversible judgement due to intransigence.

b. The only window of mercy was to surrender to captivity if they want to live vv9,10.

c. Nature of God: God is a God of second chance as long as you are ready to repent v12.

Look inward and see whether you are contributing to God’s anger on humanity or not.

PRAYER POINTS:

Lord, I have resolved not to be taking you and your word for granted again. I will be acting on them immediately

Lord, I know we have all sinned against you. In wrath remember mercy and grant us repentance and deliverance. Bring the nations back to you

Pour the Spirit of repentance on all, irrespective of status, religion and nationality and reveal yourself to all

Pray for mercy and healings of infected people including medical personnel.

HYMN:

Oh the bitter shame and sorrow

1. Oh, the bitter shame and sorrow,
That a time could ever be,
When I let the Savior’s pity
Plead in vain, and proudly answered,
All of self, and none of Thee,
All of self and none of Thee.

2. Yet He found me; I beheld Him
Bleeding on the cursed tree;
Heard Him pray, Forgive them, Father,
And my wistful heart said faintly,
Some of self, and some of Thee,
Some of self, and some of Thee.

3. Day by day His tender mercy,
Healing, helping, full and free,
Sweet and strong, and ah! so patient,
Brought me lower while I whispered,
Less of self, and more of Thee,
Less of self, and more of Thee.

4. Higher than the highest heavens,
Deeper than the deepest sea,
Lord, Thy love at last hath conquered;
Grant me now my heart’s petition,
None of self, and all of Thee,
None of self, and all of Thee.
