DCLM Daily Manna March 2020 Devotional By Pastor W.F Kumuyi – Baseless Fear

TEXT: GENESIS 12:10-20

10 And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land.

11 And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon:

12 Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive.

13 Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee.

14 And it came to pass, that, when Abram was come into Egypt, the Egyptians beheld the woman that she was very fair.

15 The princes also of Pharaoh saw her, and commended her before Pharaoh: and the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house.

16 And he entreated Abram well for her sake: and he had sheep, and oxen, and he asses, and menservants, and maidservants, and she asses, and camels.

17 And the LORD plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai Abram’s wife.

18 And Pharaoh called Abram, and said, What is this that thou hast done unto me? why didst thou not tell me that she was thy wife?

19 Why saidst thou, She is my sister? so I might have taken her to me to wife: now therefore behold thy wife, take her, and go thy way.

20 And Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him: and they sent him away, and his wife, and all that he had.

KEY VERSE: “Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive” (Genesis 12:12).

MESSAGE:

Abraham, who had departed from his father’s house by faith was worried by famine. Instead of turning to God in prayer to know what to do or where to go, he moved into Egypt. While entering Egypt, he became afraid and hatched a plan to protect himself.

DCLM DAILY MANNA 28 MARCH 2020 DEVOTIONAL

The reason for his fear was that he might be killed by the Egyptians who would want to have his wife. He, therefore, willingly gave his wife to save his life. His fears were baseless. He lied to receive favour in exchange for his wife. God had to step in to bring judgment on Pharaoh and his household.

Man often entertains baseless fears, resulting in pains. Fear whittles down our faith and sometimes introduces complications that land us into bigger troubles. Fear of the future ranks high among the issues that create anxiety in people.

Strangely, most of the fears we entertain are unfounded. It has been proven that an average person’s fear is focused on things that will never happen.

If you are apprehensive about a matter, commit it to the Lord in faith and leave it there. Abraham forgot the call on his life and went to Egypt without seeking God’s permission. He also forgot that God could supply his needs in time of famine wherever he lived.

Always remember that you are beloved of God and trust Him in times of lack, economic depression, distress, discouragement and sickness. When life’s challenges threaten, be strong, for God will save you (Isaiah 35:4).

MEDITATION

Pitfalls to avoid as observed inn the “father of faith”

1. Abraham, the father of faith, just started his faith journey without the Bible. There are lessons those of us who have the Bible can learn from him.

2. Discover your God’s appointed land of blessing (Canaan) and never leave the place because of present, pressing and problematic challenges unless clearly led otherwise vv7,10,11. This was the place Abraham enjoyed fellowship with God vv6,7.

3. Believers are not operating according to the economy of their communities but according to unlimited God’s riches Philippians 4:19. National/global famine should not cause fear. You can prosper in the midst of famine.

4. Sarah truly was a half- sister to Abraham (Genesis 20:12). But calling her a sister instead of wife was intended to deceive.

Saying the truth with the intention to deceive is a lie vv18,19, Psalm 15:1,2, Revelation 21:27. He forgot he was a covenanted person.

5. What you fear or belief has a way of coming to reality vv14-16, Job 3:25. It is better and safer to always walk by faith and not by sight.

6. Observe that the fear induced journey of Abraham was fruitless and a waste v20.

Lord, purge my heart me of every tendency to lie

Lord give me deep grace to always walk by faith and not by sight or fear

In the journey of my life, don’t ever permit me to take a step that is not according to your will

Lord, give your children the faith to say NO to the temptation to abandon their Canaan land of fellowship with you because of temporary challenges of life.

HYMN

Never be sad or desponding

1. Never be sad or desponding,
If thou hast faith to believe;
Grace, for the duties before thee,
Ask of thy God and receive.

Refrain:
Never give up,
Never give up,
Never give up to thy sorrows,
Jesus will bid them depart;
Trust in the Lord,
Trust in the Lord,
Sing when your trials are greatest,
Trust in the Lord and take heart.

2 What if thy burdens oppress thee;
What though thy life may be drear;
Look on the side that is brightest,
Pray, and thy path will be clear.

[Refrain]

3 Never be sad or desponding,
There is a morrow for thee;
Soon thou shalt dwell in its brightness,
There with the Lord thou shalt be.

[Refrain]

4 Never be sad or desponding,
Lean on the arm of thy Lord;
Dwell in the depths of His mercy,
Thou shalt receive thy reward.

[Refrain]
