DCLM Daily Manna May 2020 Devotional By Pastor W.F Kumuyi – UNWAVERING LOYALTY

It is advisable that you prayerfully and meditatively read the text first

TEXT: RUTH 1:6-22.

KEY VERSE: “And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God: Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me” (RUTH 1:16,17).

MESSAGE:

Action, they say, speaks louder than words. Spoken words do not often portray the depth of commitment of the speaker until such words are put into action.

A disciple of our Lord Jesus Christ, after he heard of His impending ordeal in the hands of the unbelieving Jews, vehemently declared, “though I should die with thee yet will I not deny thee.” But when the hour came, he never kept his word.

Famine had driven Elimelech and his family to Moab, a heathen nation, to seek livelihood. Ironically, there he and his two sons died leaving behind Naomi and the daughters-in-law, Ruth and Orpah.

Out of concern, Naomi appealed to her daughters-in-law to remain in their country. While Orpah yielded, Ruth determined to return with her to Israel.

Adverse situations tend to bring out either the good or the bad in people. Ruth’s decision to give up the possibility of security and remarriage at home to worship and serve the true and living God of Israel was indeed rewarding as she became the great-grandmother of king David and a direct ancestor of Jesus.

The lesson derivable from this is that God does not disqualify anyone from accepting and serving Him on account of race, nationality, background or social standing.

The Lord calls us today to steadfastness and total commitment, regardless of our backgrounds. God loves the sincere follower. We should not allow bitterness, grief and disappointment of the present to blindfold us to the tremendous opportunities of His love, care and restoration.

MEDITATION:

Faith centred decisions

1. Fear induced decision

a. Abimelech’s family allowed their common sense to prevail by relocating to a godless nation in the name of greener pasture without seeking for the will of God. See vv1-4 for the calamities that followed.

b. Orphah, though had passionate love for her mother in-law, decided to part with Naomi and the God of Israel because of her fear of tomorrow. She forsook Naomi and was lost in the idol worship of Moab. A “reasonable and comfortable” decision with eternal condemnation. How wise?

2. Faith based decisions

a. Naomi, after a fruitless journey of 10 years outside the will of God, decided to go back to God’s own country not minding the shame v4,19-22.
It is never too late to go back to God. In fact, that is the wisest decision.

b. Ruth, because of the God and the love she saw in her mother in-law, decided never to part with her vv16,17,18.

Challenge: Do your in- laws see God and love in you that they want to live with you and follow you to your church as long as there is life?

3. No regret for faith based decisions

a. Ruth was confronted with a test of faith against normal human reasoning and wisdom vv12,13,15.

b. The greater the test, the greater the testimony for those who scaled through. Never compare yourself with any.

a. Ruth eventually got married to Boaz and became a progenitor of Jesus Christ, while Naomi lived and died happily with her place in heaven 4:18-22.

PRAYER:

Ask for forgiveness and fully come back to God if you are suffering as a result of previous decisions outside the will of God

Ask God to always teach you to know His will before taking important decisions

Pray that nothing will separate you from the love of Christ

Pray that the Spirit of guidance and consecration to do the will of God will always rule in the life of every youth in the Church

HYMN:

Guide me O Jehovah

1. Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah,
Pilgrim through this barren land.
I am weak, but Thou art mighty;
Hold me with Thy powerful hand.
Bread of heaven,
Feed me now and evermore;
Bread of heaven,
Feed me now and evermore.

2. Open now the crystal fountain,
Whence the healing waters flow;
Let the fire and cloudy pillar
Lead me all my journey through.
Strong Deliverer,
Be Thou still my Strength and Shield.
Strong Deliverer,
Be Thou still my Strength and Shield.

3. When I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside;
Death of death, and hell’s destruction,
Land me safe on Canaan’s side.
Songs of praises, I will ever give to Thee;
Songs of praises, I will ever give to Thee
