MESSAGE:

Vow making is an agelong practice. Sometimes, it is done in appreciation of the benevolence of the benefactor to the beneficiary.

At other times, it is seen as an obligatory demand from the sovereign to the subjects. When done out of willing, appreciative and sacrificial heart, it attracts commendation and high-value. But when done out of compulsion, it loses its very essence and value.

The psalmist had had a bitter encounter and was greatly afflicted. He concluded that all men are untruthful. In his distress, he was able to recall the goodness of God in his life; the salvation of the Lord and the ability to pray.

He remembered that he had made some vows in appreciation of God’s benevolence which he had not redeemed. He quickly recovered himself and would rather offer sacrifice of thanksgiving and prayers unto the Lord and determined to pay his vows.

When we receive salvation which is purchased by the blood of Jesus Christ, we are required to render all our being and resources for His use. God does not mandate anyone to make a vow; it must come from a willing heart. But He frowns at unredeemed vows. We must not vow to impress people. It amounts to deceit for a man to vow what he cannot realistically afford.

Most significantly, none is exempted from making vows. Besides money, we can still offer ourselves; that is, our services. God owns us and all that we have. When we vow, it is mandatory to redeem such.

Many have delayed their blessings by delaying to redeem their vows. God wants us to value our vows and redeem them, thereby showing our appreciation for His benevolence.

MEDITATION:

Making vows are voluntary but…

1. What is a vow

a. A vow is a sacred promise, oath or an inconvenient sacrifice dedicated to God. For example, in the text, the psalmist was in an unusual sorrow, pains and afflictions (v3, 10b, 11), but yet he promised to offer sacrifice of thanksgivings and pay his vows.

b. It can be a consecration you make to God because it is required e.g. “Woe is unto me if I preach not the gospel” I Corinthians 9:16.

c. It may not be required but strategically needful Judges 11:31.

2. Why vows?

There is blessings in making vows to God.

a. It provokes God to release special favour to the person because vows are usually connected to a special favour from God, Genesis 28:20-22, Judges 11:29-32.

b. It is pleasing to God especially if it is a duty that God demands in His word e.g. sacrifice of praise regardless of the state of the mind vv17,19, Hebrews 13:15.

c. It binds and compels the offerer to discipline self to go an extra mile with God, which will eventually be an uncommon blessing in disguise I Corinthians 9:16.

Observe that there is no requirements for vows in the New Testament. Vows are conditional with the word “if”, whereas in the New Testament, God expects unconditional consecrations in response to what Jesus did for us.

Vows are for those in the elementary school of faith while entire consecration is for the matured in the faith and love of Christ.

3. Wisdom in giving vows Ecclesiastics 5:4-6.

a. Only fools make vows without keeping it.

b. Even though many blessings are attached to vows, it is better not vow than to vow and not keep it.

c. The excuse of making a vow in error is not tenable before God. It is damnable. So learn to apply wisdom while making vows.

PRAYER:

Ask for forgiveness of all unkept vows and ask the blood of Jesus to wipe off the repercussions

Ask God that you want to outgrow spiritual elementary school of faith and give you more love and understanding that nothing will be to big to consecrate to God

Pray that the Lord will bring our gospel ministers in the nation back to the old time biblical consecrations

Pray for youths and adults in the Church that God will bring us to a deeper walk of consecration

HYMN:

Count me

1. When you count the ones who love the Lord,
Count me, count me;
When you count up those who trust His Word,
Count me, count me.

Chorus:
Count me with the children of the heav’nly King;
Count me with the servants who would service bring;
Count me with the ransomed who His praises sing;
Count me, count me.

2 When you count up those who’re saved by grace,
Count me, count me;
Who have found in Christ a hiding place,
Count me, count me.

[Chorus]

3 When you count up those who do the right,
Count me, count me;
Who are walking in the Gospel light,
Count me, count me.

[Chorus]

4 When you count up those who forward press,
Count me, count me;
Who shall gain the crown of righteousness,
Count me, count me.

[Chorus]
