MESSAGE:

There is a mad rush in the world to acquire wealth, with the vain hope that the more riches one amasses, the happier one becomes.

While material wealth can bring a measure of comfort and give immense pleasure, it cannot guarantee anyone’s fulfillment in life. And worse still, the superficial satisfaction it affords can become an impediment to preparing for life after death.

This is the message our Lord Jesus Christ conveyed when someone asked Him to adjudicate in a dispute with his brother over inheritance. While dismissing the man’s request, He used the opportunity to underscore the right attitude towards the accumulation of wealth.

He warned the man to guard against greed and covetousness. He illustrated this with the parable of the rich man who prospered greatly in his business. He had taken plentiful harvest and was suddenly consumed by the desire to amass more wealth.

As he wandered within himself how to achieve this feat, he came to the conclusion that he would have to enlarge his storehouse to accommodate more goods. He thought this would bring him a life of ease and merriment. And just when he thought he had it all worked out, God came to him that night and demanded for his soul. It was clearly foolish of him to go through so much trouble to take care of his comfort on earth without sparing a thought for the afterlife.

As a believer, you should not join the madding crowd that accumulates wealth for its own sake. If God has blessed you with riches, you should establish a flourishing relationship with Him; then use your wealth to assist other people. This is how to lay your treasure in heaven.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Planning for life before death is wisdom but neglecting life after death is disastrous.

MEDITATION:

An example of foolishness

1. The covetous and the careless

a. His brother did not want to share a joint inheritance with his brother- covetousness v13.

b. His mind was preoccupied with earthly possessions when Jesus was speaking to them about serious matter of the eternal kingdom in vv1-12 – carelessness vv14-15.

2. The full and the foolish vv16-21.

a. He thought fruitfulness and wealth were solely due to his handwork and wisdom/smartness vv17,18,21, Deuteronomy 8:18.

b. He did not know that the motivation and purpose of wealth is not accumulation but sharing v18, I Timothy 6:17,18.

c. He was blinded to the fact that death can come at anytime. Eternity was not in his view. He never prepared for it vv19,20.

Q. What other foolishness could you observe in this rich man?

Hope you are not guilty of the same?

3. Wisdom for the wise

a. God did not demand any visible possession from him including his wealth, property, body, relations, etc from him. God does not need them. They are just for earthly conveniences and not eternal v20. Paul called them “dung” Phillipians 3:8.

b. God required precious invisible things from him which are eternal – his soul and his heart v20.

c. God is still asking for the same: “My son, give me your heart” Proverbs 23:26.

d. What he refused to give willingly was eventually taken from him by the Owner-Creator without his consent vv20,21. He is still doing the same today.

Q Is there anything you are withholding from God? Be wise now before it is too late.

PRAYER POINTS:

Pray that God will wash every form of covetousness from your heart by the blood of Jesus

Ask for special grace so that eternal things will be major in your heart

Ask God to crush every form of foolishness from your mind and heart and make you truly wise.

Pray that God will give his children the understanding and wisdom that will surrender all to Jesus without hesitation.
