MESSAGE:

Every believer who wants to enjoy constant intimacy with God and record consistent growth in his or her Christian journey should have what is called a teachable spirit.

Only one man in the Bible enjoys the designation of being a man after God’s own heart –David. To outward appearance, David is more readily remembered as a gross sinner. He committed adultery, murdered, lied, betrayed his nation, made severe mistakes in judgement, was a poor manager, and finally was unable to manage his home. Yet God said, “I have found David, the son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who will do all my will.”

Almost every time we read about David, he was doing something wrong, yet God commended the heart of his leadership. How do we explain it? The answer is in the fact that with every mistake, David repented; and of equal importance, he learned from his mistakes.

This is a great lesson we should all learn from the life of David. In other words, David was humble and teachable. Besides, he listened to his critics and his enemies as well; and foremost of all, he heeded the prophet of God. This teachable spirit is the trait that caused God to classify him as Israel’s finest leader.

Two instances come to mind here. First, when God sent Prophet Nathan to David concerning his sin as touching Bathsheba and Uriah, he broke down and confessed that he had sinned against the Lord.

He opened up to Prophet Nathan in contrition and sought the face of God in fasting and praying. He humbled himself. The second instance was when God had delivered Jonah from the belly of the whale, He commanded him to take His message to the people of Nineveh.

This time, Jonah obeyed God. Beloved, we all need this trait to succeed in our Christian journey. A person with a teachable spirit is not beyond correction. He or she is humble enough to take positive criticism from friends and critics as tool for self-improvement.

He or she will not blame others for his errors or try to cover up his faults. A person with a teachable spirit wants to please God rather than man and will endure the chastening of the Lord, if necessary. Do you have a teachable spirit? If you don’t, you can have it today.
